Finding Strength

image

But David found strength in the LORD his God.  (1 Sam. 30:6)

Here we see what David, a man after God’s own heart, does after losing everything.

Literally everything.

He lost his family. All his possessions. His men were turning against him.
In fact, they were about to stone him.

And what does David do?

The Bible says “David found strength in the LORD his God.”

David doesn’t get bitter. And he doesn’t retaliate nor does he try to defend himself or preserve his life.

Instead, he FINDS STRENGTH in the Lord his God.

And how does one do that?

God says, “In Repentance and Rest is your Salvation, in Quietness and Trust is your Strength.” (Isa. 30:15)

In times of great loss and trials, if we’ll learn to remain quiet and trust God (be still & know that He is God) here’s what God promises:

“I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” (Isa. 41:10)

Because God’s specializes in “giving strength to the weary and increasing the power of the weak.” (Isa. 40:29)

“For the eyes of the Lord range throughout the earth to strengthen those
whose hearts are fully committed to him.”  (2 Chronicles 16:9

In God’s Eyes, Full Commitment = Being Quiet & Trusting Him.

Inaction = Choice

image

Not doing anything is a grievous sin.

Most of us actually choose by not choosing.  And act by not acting.

By not choosing to be for God, we choose to be against God.
By not working with God, we work against God.   (Luke 11:23, NLT)

There is no middle ground.

In spiritual battle, it’s always an either or situation.
Either you’re for/with God or you’re not.

Not sinning does NOT equal being for God.

Our effort to ‘Not be a sinner’ will always fail.
But our effort to ‘Be a child of God’ will always be blessed.

God does NOT reward inaction.
Rather He rewards Pro-active & Relentless Pursuit & Action.

Choose to be Active with God.

Because the Bible is clear.

If you’re Not “in action” with God, you’re “inaction” against God.

My "Saraph" (Anxious Thoughts)

image

Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts.  (Ps. 139:23)

David invites God to search him. To know his heart. And to know his “anxious thoughts”.

The Hebrew word he uses is actually “Saraph” which literally means, thoughs that makes one anxious (disquieting thoughts).

Saraph …

Thoughts that create noise and trouble.
Thoughts that enshroud us in darkness and chaos.
Thoughts that drives us crazy.
Thoughts that we can’t get out of our heads.

David invites God to his “saraph”.

Because he knows that God’s presence will do the job.

“For He grants sleep to those He loves” (Ps. 127:2)

“I will lie down and sleep in peace, for you alone, O Lord, make me dwell in safety.” (Ps. 4:8)

With God … “when you lie down, you will not be afraid; your sleep will be sweet” (Prov. 3:24)

So, if you’re in your “Saraph Moment” … well, you know what to do. :)

Self-Obsessing vs Self-Giving

image

Someone once said:

Never before has humanity spent such an inordinate amount of time making ourselves look good.

He was talking about twitter, facebook & other social media hubs.

Nowadays, narcissism is a norm.  No one thinks twice about it.  We constantly obsess about ourselves.  It’s we, us and ourselves 24-7.

In the media-drenched landscape in which we live, vanity is no longer a sin; it is a virtue.

And yet humanity, in our emptiness & utter despair, we still long to be happy. We want to find meaning & fulfillment.

But in our narcissism & self-obsession, we won’t find them.

From the creation of this world, God set it up so that we would only find happiness, meaning & fulfillment only when we fully give ourselves.

As long as we’re obsessing about ‘what’s on our mind’ we will always fall short of happiness.  If life continues to be about us, that’s about as far we’ll go in our pursuit of happiness, ourselves.

Only when we turn outward, start giving thanks, start shopping for others, think about our families and start loving the people in our neighborhood, we’ll begin to create momentum toward happiness, meaning & fulfillment.

Tis’ the season.  The happiest time of the year.  When we corporately, together as a group, stop the obsession and start the giving.

“Black friday” will no longer be “black” if we actually stood in line & bought stuff for others rather than ourselves.

Why Jesus?

Muhammad was just a man.

Buddha was just a teacher.

Confucius, more a social philosopher.

Joseph Smith, who founded Mormonism, and Charles Taze Russell, who founded the Jehovah’s Witnessess, and L. Ron Hubbard, who founded Scientology, are flawed sinners like you and me.

None of these people and none of their philosophies and ideas can save us.

Just like us they’re guilty before a holy God.

Only Jesus can save. Only Jesus offers the world outside help. And that’s what the world needs.

We need God to come down to earth to save us. Only Jesus claims this for Himself. Only Jesus died and rose again. And only Jesus can and will unite all things in Himself.

“For there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus.” (1 Timothy 2:5)

“I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.” (John 14:6)

Falling in Love vs Staying in Love

image

Everybody wants to fall in love.

But not everyone knows how to stay in love.

Hardly anyone has really witnessed people who have “stayed in love” and gone that distance.  Everywhere we look, we’re exposed to messed up & seriously complicated relationships.

Relationships nowadays aren’t working out.  And it seems as though everyone’s looking for a new relationship that will somehow magically fix everything. Another human being who’ll be different and actually be the one.

So the jump continues from one relationship from another.  Always empty. Always lonely.  Always hurt.

But, Jesus says “Love one another.”  (John 13:34)

Jesus says, don’t hope to “fall in love” but dare to “stay in love”.

Do everything in your power to love.  Instead of demanding love & wishing for love or lover, be the lover.  Love!  Love with everything you’ve got!

We seem to almost always use the word love as a noun.  (i.e.  fall in love)

But Jesus always used the word love as a verb.  (i.e.  love one another)

Because Jesus knew, the key to happiness & eternal life will always begin by turning a noun into a verb.

When we don't know who we are . . .

When we don’t know who we are, we find it hard to know what we should be doing.

Therefore, when we don’t know who we are, we become slaves to our feelings. The momentary emotions we feel begin to dominate our lives, and we become what we’re feeling at that moment.

When we don’t know who we are, we become entrapped by our circumstance.

The world defines us, our lives become reactive to whatever is happening around us, and we become more frustrated as the ups and downs of life govern us.

We get confused and life becomes complicated when we don’t know who we are.

The problem has always been and always will be “not knowing ourselves”.

The Defining Factor

image

The defining factor in our lives isn’t resources but resourcefulness.

We can rationalize and make all the excuses about not having the time and money.  We can talk about how we didn’t have the right family, environment, people around us and so on.

But resources (i.e. time, money, technology, people, etc.) isn’t the defining factor in our lives.

Here’s a chart for us to remember:

Resource vs. Resourcefulness

Time / Creativity

Money / Determination

Technology / Love - Caring

Contacts / Curiosity

Experience / Passion

Management / Resolve

Bill Cosby - I'm Tired

This little “rant” by Bill Cosby causes us to think about our future, the future of our nation.

I’m 76 and I’m Tired.

I’m 76. Except for brief period in the 50’s when I was doing my National Service, I’ve worked hardsince I was 17. Except for some some serious health challenges, I put in 50-hour weeks, and didn’t call in sick in nearly 40 years. I made a reasonable salary, but I didn’t inherit my job or my income, and I worked to get where I am. Given the economy, it looks as though retirement was a bad idea, and I’m tired.. Very tired.

I’m tired of being told that I have to “spread the wealth” to people who don’t have my work ethic. I’m tired of being told the government will take the money I earned, by force if necessary, and give it to people too lazy to earn it.

I’m tired of being told that Islam is a “Religion of Peace,” when every day I can read dozens of stories of Muslim men killing their sisters, wives and daughters for their family “honour”; of Muslims rioting over some slight offense; of Muslims murdering Christian and Jews because they aren’t “believers”; of Muslims burning schools for girls; of Muslims stoning teenage rape victims to death for “adultery”; of Muslims mutilating the genitals of little girls; all in the name of Allah, because the Qur’an and Shari’a law tells them to.

I’m tired of being told that out of “tolerance for other cultures” we must let Saudi Arabia and other Arab countries use our oil money to fund mosques and mandrassa Islamic schools to preach hate in Australia, New Zealand, UK, America and Canada, while no one from these countries are allowed to fund a church, synagogue or religious school in Saudi Arabia or any other Arab country to teach love and tolerance..

I’m tired of being told I must lower my living standard to fight global warming, which no one is allowed to debate.

I’m tired of being told that drug addicts have a disease, and I must help support and treat them, and pay for the damage they do. Did a giant germ rush out of a dark alley, grab them, and stuff white powder up their noses or stick a needle in their arm while they tried to fight it off?

I’m tired of hearing wealthy athletes, entertainers and politicians of all parties talking about innocent mistakes, stupid mistakes or youthful mistakes, when we all know they think their only mistake was getting caught. I’m tired of people with a sense of entitlement, rich or poor..

I’m really tired of people who don’t take responsibility for their lives and actions. I’m tired of hearing them blame the government, or discrimination or big-whatever for their problems.

I’m also tired and fed up with seeing young men and women in their teens and early 20’s bedeck themselves in tattoos and face studs, thereby making themselves un-employable and claiming money from the Government.

Yes, I’m damn tired.. But I’m also glad to be 76.. Because, mostly, I’m not going to have to see the world these people are making. I’m just sorry for my granddaughter and her children.   Thank God I’m on the way out and not on the way in.

What do you think about this little “rant”?

What kind of future are we creating?

3 Questions on God's Test

image

The Bible tells us that things happen in our lives for a reason.

Happenings in the  life of a Christian are not random, accidental, incoherent events.  But they are strategically placed in our lives for a very specific purpose.

There’s an interesting verse in the Bible which says:

The Lord disciplines those he loves, and he punishes everyone he accepts as a son.  Endure hardship as discipline; God is treating you as sons. For what son is not disciplined by his father?  (Heb. 12:6-7)

God guarantees trials, hardships, & persecution for those who are faithful.  And to those He accepts & considers as His sons & daughters, He’s especially faithful to discipline and test them.

If you’re life is rockin’ and have been care & pain-free since you “became a christian”, there is definitely something wrong with your Christianity.   Because according to the Bible, God promises to discipline those who are for real about becoming His son & daughter.

There are many ways in which God tests His children.  It could be bankruptcy, cancer, death of a loved one, or broken relationships.  And in every on of these tests, there are 3 questions God asks us.

1. Do you believe I’m in control?

2. Do you believe I am good?

3. Are you willing to wait by faith until you see it?

James, the half brother of Jesus, who knew about God’s tests wrote:

Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance.  (Jam. 1:2-3)

Question:  How can you experience joy (divine contentment) when you are being tested?

Answer:  Because it will develop perseverance.  (Gr. ὑπομονή)

The Greek word ὑπομονή literally means to “Remain Under”.

It means, joy is experienced when you don’t you dare run away or fold under pressure.  When you dare to stand & remain under pressure.

Don’t go looking for seemingly better circumstances. But be faithful to remain and stay under the pressure of your church, your family, your relationships, and your circumstances.  Declare ownership of the full responsibility for you to be where you are and face it.  Remain under.  Persevere. Endure.  And be patient.

Question:  Why on earth would we want to do that?

Because “perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.”  (James 1:4, NIV)

Or in other translations, it says, “that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing”. (ESV)

Mature faith, Perfection & Completeness only comes when we dare to Remain Under.

  • Don’t run.  Don’t try to find your way out of this one.
  • Instead, stay.  Remain Under.
  • Answer the 3 Questions.
  • Dare to trust God.
  • And become perfect just as your Heavenly Father is Perfect.

God's Law & Our Freedom

image

How can God’s Law & Our Freedom be possibly related?

In order to answer this question, we need to go back to God’s very first law.

Remember that one?

It seem a bit random to us now, but here it is:

You must not eat from the tree of knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat of it you will surely die. (Gen. 2:17)

That One Law served as a daily reminder of God’s authority over mankind. Obeying it kept things in their proper order and guaranteed that Adam and Eve would experience MAXIMUM FREEDOM.

As long as they didn’t break that law, they were as FREE as two humans could possibly be.

What was true then is still true today:

Maximum freedom is always found under the authority of God.

Contrary to what many think, God’s Law does not keep us from something good.

Rather, God’s Law is Good!  Because it Protects & Guarantees our Freedom!

The Fish is only Free when it’s UNDER WATER.  If they thought to themselves, “I’m so sick & tired of water.  If I can only get out of water, I’d be free.” Wouldn’t that be like the dumbest thing you’ve ever heard?

It’s quite ironic though, because we in our foolishness say the same thing.  ”I’m so sick & tired of God, church, Christianity & all this Religion crap.  If I can only get out of it & do my own thing, I’d be free.”

Sound familiar?

God is passionate about our freedom.  Our Maximum Freedom.

He was so passionate about it that He actually came to Set Us Free!

He put us Back In The Water!

When we were struggling to breathe and live without Him, He made a way for us to be IN HIM.

This is why, only IN CHRIST JESUS, we are FREE!
